Tasmanian Blackheart Sassafras (Antherosperma moschatum) can grow to 40 metres high with a width of 1 metre. Tasmanian sassafras is very different from North American and East Asian Sassafras species, but they share a magical aroma. The characteristic 'blackheart' streaks are due to a fungus infection that stains the wood. More information on Tasmanian sassafras can be found here.
Tasmanian Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) is a timber that is irresistible to Tasmanian designers. Blackwood has a variety of colours ranging from light golden-brown to deep brown. It occurs throughout Tasmania's native forests but an 8,000 ha swamp forest is dedicated to Blackwood silviculture on a sustainable yield basis. Rotations are generally around 70 years. More information on Tasmanian Blackwood can be found here.
